Paperlands
A downloadable zine game
Roll dice, place buildings, play for the highest score you can!
Printing instructions
Download the attached PDF file and print it double-sided. You should end up with two pieces of paper. When printing, try to print them at full scale instead of "fit to print" (this helps everything line up properly).
Once you have the two pages, cut along the solid lines and fold along the dotted lines. You'll end up with a folded cover and ten game sheets, which you can slot into the cover. After this, you're ready to play!
You will need
A handful of six-sided dice, a pencil or pen, and the printed game sheets. It's all good to keep the cover booklet on hand because it contains a full rules reference.
Game Rules
Step 1: Roll. Roll 3 dice, all at once.
Step 2: Build. Now you can spend your dice to place buildings on the map. Each building scores points in a different way. See the table on the inside cover for a full list of the different types of buildings you can build.
Placing buildings costs certain dice rolls or combinations of rolls. When you spend dice, place them to the side. Spent dice cannot be used again until the next round.
After paying the required dice cost, draw the building’s icon in any empty hex. Buildings must always be placed next to an existing building.
Step 3: Repeat! Mark off 1 round on the counter and return to step 1. Once 12 rounds have elapsed, or if the map is full up, the game ends.
Add up the amount of points scored by each of your buildings to determine your final score!
Gameplay tips and tricks!
- Lots of buildings score points depending on what terrain they have adjacent to them. Think about which type of building will score the most points for you in a particular space.
- There is no advantage to finishing the game early, nor to finishing the game with blank spaces left on your board. Pace your building speed.
- Farms don't score many points on their own, but you can maximise their effectiveness by putting them next to water and building windmills to boost their score. Just be wary of how much space this takes up!
- Markets are a long-term investment, as they reduce your points but allow you to roll more dice in game step 1. It's best to buy them early so they earn back their cost.
- Shrines can be costly, but become more valuable the more of them you build. A shrine-building strategy works best when you commit to it fully!
- Fortresses score you the most points of any building. Building markets can make it more likely for you to roll the required triples during step 1.
